Our journey to Stuff Etc
Stuff Etc® Quality Consignment Stores are currently Iowa’s largest department consignment store group. It certainly didn’t start that way, nor did we ever imagine it would grow so dramatically.
We started out in 1985 with the name of Kids Stuff and Kountry Kreations. Our first storefront in Iowa City was on Highland Court in a 750 square foot building, in a light industrial area where we shared our building with a bar and a sheet metal shop. We dealt only with children’s merchandise and country crafts. In spite of the lousy location for retail, our business started to grow.
After a year there, we decided to build a new building on Keokuk Street. This increased our space to 3,000 square foot (as shown). After 6 years we outgrew this location and moved into a new location on Pepperwood Lane with 10,000 square feet.
Our customers and consignors were asking for more than children’s merchandise, so we decided to branch out and make our store a department store. Country decor was on its way out, so we dropped that completely and decided to change our name to Stuff Etc.
In 2000, we decided to add a second location. With some apprehension, we rented an 8,000 square foot space in Coralville. However, within a couple years any uneasiness was quickly replaced with an urgency to find a larger space. In 2003, we decided to venture into the Cedar Rapids market. We rented a 21,000 square foot space on the west side of Cedar Rapids. Meanwhile, we began building a new store on Commerce Drive in Coralville, that was 36,000 square feet on 2 levels (our current location). In July of 2005, we moved our Iowa City store into a 24,000 square foot space in a strip mall at Pepperwood Plaza (once a Best Buy). In December of 2005, we opened a second Cedar Rapids store on the east side. In 2010, we sold our very first franchise in Waterloo and opened our second franchise in Davenport in 2011. In 2013, we opened the Ankeny branch, and approximately August of 2017 you can also find us in Clive!
